About the Organization
Robi Axiata PLC is one of Bangladesh's largest and most established mobile network operators, with a history stretching back to the early years of the country's telecom industry. Robi Axiata is the second-largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh; Axiata of Malaysia holds a major controlling stake of 61.82% in the company, while Bharti Airtel of India holds 28.18% and investors in the DSE and CSE hold 10%. Its origins and evolution map closely onto the growth of mobile telephony in Bangladesh; Robi first commenced operation in 1997 as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh) with the brand name "AKTEL," was re-branded to "Robi" in 2010 and renamed Robi Axiata Limited, and became Robi Axiata PLC in 2024 as a listed public limited company.
A defining moment in its history was a landmark consolidation of the market. On 16 November 2016, Airtel Bangladesh merged into Robi as a product brand, with Robi Axiata PLC becoming the licensee of the Airtel brand in Bangladesh, and through this merger Robi emerged as the second-largest mobile phone operator in the country. It has consistently been a technology pioneer in the sector; Robi was the first operator to introduce GPRS and 3.5G services in the country and the first company to launch 4.5G service in all 64 districts, achieving that on the first day of the commercial launch on 20 February 2018. The company is headquartered in Dhaka and currently runs live 2G, 4G, and 5G networks.
Business Operations
Robi operates as a full-service mobile and digital-services provider with one of the most extensive network footprints in the country. Robi Axiata PLC provides voice, data, and digital services; international roaming; IT-related services; device sales; and a range of value-added services. Its infrastructure is among the largest nationally; as of August 2024, Robi operated more than 18,000 mobile network towers across Bangladesh, and by the end of 2018 it had built the country's largest 4.5G network covering 99% of the thanas.
Beyond core connectivity, Robi has invested heavily in a digital-services ecosystem and local innovation. Its subsidiaries include Axentec PLC, Binge, RedDot Digital Limited, and Smart Pay Limited, and its platforms include the video-streaming service Binge and bdapps, a mobile-application platform that supports domestic developers. The company is also a long-standing supporter of national sport as a sponsor of the Bangladesh national cricket team, and it is listed on the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges.
Affiliations With BUP Career Club
Robi has a strong, confirmed history with the BUP Career Club, having served as the headline sponsor of its flagship event. The BUP Career & Education Fest 2019 was presented by Robi, in association with Yellow, on the BUP campus, with One Bank Limited and HBD Services as event partners, and Robi also featured among the participating companies at that edition. Its engagement with the fest goes beyond sponsorship into active recruitment; Robi has used the BUP Career & Education Fest platform to promote its graduate and internship pipelines, including a virtual internship programme offered to students through the fest. Again in 2026, Robi appears and takes an interactive seminar titled 'AI and Relevant Skills in the Booming Industry of TeleCom' along with introduces the CampusConnect program in BUP Career and Education Fest 2026.
This affiliation is a strong, natural fit. The BUP Career Club works to create a bridge between the corporate world and the university, helping fresh graduates reach their desired professions while equipping students with the skills to stay ahead of the competition. As one of Bangladesh's largest mobile operators and a major technology employer with graduate-trainee and internship programmes, Robi offers BUP students exposure to careers across telecommunications, technology, digital services, sales and marketing, and corporate functions, while the company taps a strong pool of young talent for its leadership pipeline.
