About the Organization
BRAC is the world's largest non-governmental development organisation and one of Bangladesh's most globally influential institutions. BRAC is an international development organisation based in Bangladesh; founded by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in 1972, shortly after the independence of Bangladesh, it is the largest non-governmental development organisation in the world in terms of the number of employees, and now operates in all 64 districts of Bangladesh and in many other countries across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Its beginnings were humanitarian; BRAC began in 1972 as a relief organisation to support displaced people in the newly independent Bangladesh, but in the five decades since, it has grown to become the largest and arguably most enterprising NGO in the world, treating poverty as a multidimensional problem.
The organisation was the life's work of a singular figure. BRAC, the largest NGO in the world, was founded by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, whose conviction in the dignity and value of every human being defined the organisation, changed the course of Bangladesh's development, and influenced the development sector globally. Today its reach is enormous and its model distinctive; founded in 1972 in post-war Bangladesh as a small relief effort, BRAC is now the world's largest southern-led development organisation, with a solutions-focused model spanning education, health, financial inclusion, and livelihoods that has reached over 145 million people. It is headquartered at BRAC Centre in Mohakhali, Dhaka, and is currently led by Executive Director Asif Saleh; Asif Saleh, Executive Director of BRAC, was named to TIME's 2026 TIME100 Philanthropy list of the most influential leaders shaping giving.
Operations
BRAC operates not as a conventional charity but as an integrated "solutions ecosystem" that blends development programmes with self-sustaining enterprises. It is a unique ecosystem comprising development programmes, microfinance, social enterprises, a university, a bank, and a range of mission-aligned investments, an unusually diversified structure for a non-profit. This hybrid model is also what underpins its financial resilience; born in and led from the global south, BRAC operates as a solutions ecosystem including social development programmes, social enterprises, humanitarian response, a bank, and a university, with a diversified funding strategy that has helped it weather aid cuts.
Its programmatic history includes some of the most cited successes in global development. In 1980 BRAC launched its Oral Therapy Extension Program, training more than 12 million women in Bangladesh to make oral rehydration solution at home and saving countless lives. Within Bangladesh, BRAC's institutional family is itself a major part of the country's economy and includes well-known entities such as BRAC Bank, bKash, BRAC University, and the social enterprise Aarong, several of which are also connected to the BUP Career Club through their own participation in its events.
Affiliations With BUP Career Club
BRAC has a confirmed history of engaging with the BUP Career Club's flagship event as a participating organisation. At the recent BUP Career and Education Fest 2026 Brac was a key participating company. At the BUP Career and Education Fest 2019, BRAC was among the participating companies, listed separately alongside Robi, Beximco, Grameenphone, BRAC Bank, bKash, IPDC Finance, and Renata Limited, among others. A total of 60 companies participated in 2026 fair, which the BUP Career Club organised over several days on campus. The wider BRAC ecosystem has remained a recurring presence at the fest, with BRAC Bank participating in later editions and the social enterprise Aarong serving as co-sponsor of the 2023 edition and a participating company of 2026 edition.
This affiliation is a natural fit between the two organisations. The BUP Career Club works to create a bridge between the corporate world and the university, helping fresh graduates reach their desired professions while equipping students with the skills to stay ahead of the competition. As the world's largest development organisation, with an ecosystem spanning development programmes, social enterprises, a bank, and a university, BRAC offers BUP students an exceptionally broad range of career pathways, from development, research, and humanitarian work to microfinance, social enterprise, and management, while the organisation gains access to a strong pool of mission-driven graduates.
